The Harp Twins will blow your mind right now!
Camille and Kennerly Kitt, also known as the Harp Twins are an up and coming fantastic musical duo and today we get to peek into their lives and get to know them. They wrote an original song called "North" which you can view here.
Camille and Kennerly were inspired to create "North" from their heritage. The Twins themselves grew up in Illinois, USA, but their family comes from strong Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish descent, and they wanted to pay homage to their strong and brave ancestors through "North". The beautiful song of "North" is about perseverance and being able to embrace what life has given you. The Harp Twins are very creative and theatrical and wanted to use those gifts of theirs to make it as beautiful visually as it was for the ears. From the abundance of positive comments and support from their fans, it sounds like they did just that. The Harp Twins started playing the harp in middle school, after they had already become accomplished at the piano. Both of them felt drawn to the harp and it became a dream for them; so much so, they worked extremely hard at several odd jobs to be able to afford a harp of their very own. Their mom, who sounds like a wonderful lady, saw how determined they were, and helped them receive their second harp.
The Harp Twins are the only professional musicians in their family, but they did receive their love of rock music from their mom and grew up listening to rock and classic rock because of her.
They are classically trained in the piano, as well as some percussion and of course their lovely singing. They hope to implement a new secret instrument in their musical repertoire sometime in the future, and I for one cannot wait to find out what it will be.
The Twins have many musical influences, to name a few: The Rolling Stones, Stevie Nicks, Aerosmith, and Johnny Cash. Some of their all-time favorite songs are "Don't Fear the Reaper" (Blue Oyster Cult) and "Enter Sandman" (Metallica) They pull from their influences to create the music they do, but they also pull inspiration from nature and art. They said their biggest influences are "those who step outside the 'box' and follow their own path". Their mom says they have always marched to beat of their own drummer, in step with each other. (Maybe the drum will be their new instrument ;) )
The Twins turned to YouTube to give prospective clients and idea of how they play and what they can do. It was a rough start in the beginning because of how the harp is stereotypically an instrument just used for orchestras, weddings, and tea rooms; no one thinks of rock music when they think of the harp. The Twins have begun to break that mold by expanding everyone's minds, and again they are marching to the beat of that drummer they listen to. For their future in the harp, the Twins hope to achieve world domination though their radical Duet Harp Revolution; and as well and as beautiful as they play, I think that is a very possible goal.
For future artists, the twins have this sage advice: "We would encourage aspiring musicians to follow their dreams – even if those dreams are outside the box. We think it is most important to be yourself and no one else. Find your own unique niche that is 100% you. We see so many artists who are just trailing behind someone else and trying to be that person – it's so much better to be a first-rate YOU rather than a second-rate version of someone else. Work hard. Then work harder. Don't give up because things are hard or not going as you planned. Put in the practice hours because there are no real shortcuts. Find a teacher who not only teaches skills, but who also allows you to love your instrument - our first harp teacher was so negative that we almost lost our love for the instrument, but thankfully our mom found another teacher who allowed us to grow and learn to love the instrument even more. We were fortunate enough to continue on with that teacher through our university conservatory studies. We think it's extremely important to keep the love for your instrument first and foremost. When we get discouraged we always turn back to why we are doing what we're doing – we absolutely love the harp and we love the harp even more when we're playing together! "
The Harp Twins were nice enough to share this tidbit of back story about their personal lives with me to share with you so we can get to know them a little better.: When they were kids they had a horrible house fire and lost practically everything. Their family went from rental to rental, to actually splitting up and staying with extended family for years. Their insurance company never came through for them, so they ended up learning how to rebuild their own home themselves as a family. After school, they bent conduit, stained baseboards, grouted flooring etc. They learned early on that life isn't fair or easy, a very hard lesson for a kid. They were blessed and grateful that their family was safe, and they were even able to grab their cat on the way out of the house as well! Through this, they learned another important lesson; that "stuff" is not important, and they learned that they could lose it all and still have everything. They know now that starting over is possible and that the people with least usually are the ones that give the most. The most vibrant memory they have from this tragedy is that out of their whole neighborhood, the only person who came to their aid was one with the least money. This angel was a single mom of foster children, and she brought them toothbrushes to sweatshirts and sweatpants. They remember sitting on a curb in a cold November with no shoes watching their house burn, and though they would not want to wish that horrible experience on anyone, especially children, they believe through that experience they have been shaped into who they are today. They are strong, they are brave and they are blessed. They are definitely the embodiment of that age old expression of "when a life gives you lemons……." They have made the most of it, and they turned it into something sweet.
